CMT Counselling and Supervision

Hello
My name is Cheryl McDonald-Tuckwell and I am a Counsellor working with adults, adolescents and children.
With 16 years experience as a counsellor I understand how being listened to can be transformative. Being truly heard, without judgement, can help us to really see and accept ourselves.

All of my sessions take place online (Zoom).
My Story
I qualified as a Person-Centred Counsellor in 2009 and later completed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy training at the University of Derby. More recently, I achieved a Postgraduate Diploma in Working with Complex Trauma and PTSD and am currently undertaking a master’s degree in Forensic Psychology.

My early career focused on supporting adults, including establishing a private practice within a GP surgery and working with a charity that supports individuals bereaved by murder and manslaughter. I also volunteered in adolescent mentoring, working with young offenders through the Restorative Justice programme.

A growing passion for supporting young people led me to complete a Diploma in Counselling Children and Adolescents and to qualify as a Drawing and Talking Therapy Practitioner. Today, my work is divided between two key areas: supporting children and adolescents in educational settings, particularly those with neurodiversity, focusing on emotional regulation and social skills, and providing counselling to adults.

I have undertaken extensive continuing professional development (CPD), which allows me to integrate various therapeutic approaches to best meet each client’s unique needs. I believe that therapy should be flexible, as one approach does not fit all. My recent professional interests include Polyvagal Theory and Childhood Emotional Neglect.

As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I am deeply committed to supporting individuals through transitions and emotional challenges, informed by both professional and personal experience.

I am also a qualified Clinical Supervisor, offering supervision to trainee and qualified counsellors working with both adults and children. My experience within educational environments and as a counsellor on the BetterHelp platform provides additional insight for those seeking supervision in those contexts.

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP) and adhere to their ethical framework and code of conduct.
