Hello

My name is Cheryl McDonald-Tuckwell and I am a Counsellor working with adults, adolescents and children.

With 16 years experience as a counsellor I understand how being listened to can be transformative. Being truly heard, without judgement, can help us to really see and accept ourselves.

All of my sessions take place online (Zoom).

My Story

I trained as a Person Centred Counsellor, qualifying in 2009, then went on to complete my Cognitive Behavioural Therapy training with the University of Derby.  I have recently completed a PG Diploma in Working with Complex Trauma and PTSD. I worked with adults during the first part of my career, setting up a practice in a GP surgery, and also with a charity supporting people bereaved through Murder and Manslaughter.  I then volunteered in adolescent mentoring, working with young offenders as part of the Restorative Justice programme.

Enjoying my work with children and adolescents led me to complete a Diploma in Counselling Children and Adolescents, as well as qualifying as a Drawing and Talking Therapy Practitioner.  There are two parts to my work now, working in an Educational setting supporting young people, especially those with Neurodiversity, specialising in Emotional Regulation and Social Skills, and supporting adults in a Counselling capacity.  I have completed a number of CPD courses allowing me to bring in aspects of many different models to my work with clients, as I understand that one size does not fit all.  More recently I have been developing my knowledge of Polyvagal Theory and Childhood Emotional Neglect.

As part of the LGBTQIA+ community, I have a strong interest in supporting others through the many transitions and emotions that may arise, through my own personal experiences.

I am a qualified Clinical Supervisor, offering supervision to trainee and qualified counsellors, who work with both adults and children.   I have experience of working in an Educational setting and on the BetterHelp platform, which is sometimes useful for those seeking supervision within these roles.

I am a member of the BACP (MBACP) and abide by their code of conduct.
